The 2023 Barossa Valley single vineyard Mataro is a pure love of Nigels. The vineyard is situated on the eastern slopes of the valley near Rowland Flat. Hand picked - literally a few hundred kilograms and then whizzed off to the winery. We crushed and de-stemmed and then sucked some colourless juice out of it to further concentrate the colour and flavour for the ferment in a process known as 'saignee'.
Deep red in the glass, the wine shows classic aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and a charred new oak backbone. On the palate gives an up-front hit of flavour and firm tannin that quickly coats the mouth with flavour. Juicy and ripe, but then the powerful structural tannin and acid comes through for a long and chewy finish. A little French but mainly American oak was used on the wine, designed to richen and sweeten the natural dark Cherry fruit like flavours.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better Australian Mataro.
